Black and White and Red all over

What’s black, white, and red all over? Elefint Tees!

(I know, that was a terrible joke, but you know how much I love being cheesy.)

I’ve always been a great fan of the simplicity of black, white and red. That color combination has always struck me as the most basic palate for design. And I think that Jonathan Capuano, the designer behind Elefint, really knows how to maximize the look of those colors on a t-shirt. (Take a look at that raven!)

Elefint tees come in lots of other colors as well—the Basket Bike Tee comes in exactly eleven colors—and I’m particularly partial to the Cold Owl Hoodie—which would make a really excellent Christmas gift for a specific family member—but in the end I’m loving the basic black, white and red.

Btw, everything Elefint makes is screen-printed by hand and made to order by Jonathan. (Check out his design portfolio here.)

I also love this tote bag. Too cute.

Apparently they sell these at Target and Urban Outfitters, but I’ve definitely never seen them there—though, to be fair, living in Manhattan has really curtailed my Target addition, and I’ve been feeling too old to shop in UO since I turned about 23. So if you see one of those Iceberg tees in a ladies Medium, be sure to send it my way. (I promise I’ll pay you back.)

By the way, I’m pretty sure you’re going to see this studio show up on 2 Gigs / 1 Artist in the very near future.

Tiptoe Through Our Shiny City With Our National T-shirts On

As I’ve been assembling my collection of gig posters for 2 Gigs / 1 Artist, I’ve been inspired by the way I’ve been seeing the ways that an artist’s style comes through even when confronting different subjects. This got me thinking more about the way graphic artists use music as inspiration…

Here is the inevitable equation that followed:

Yes. So let’s start with one of my fave bands: The National.

Intl. Robot will punch you out

I was stoked when my friend Susan from The Slender Grasshopper based her whole guest post on geeky tees since I’m a total nerd. So I thought I’d expand on the idea with a feature on a company that makes being square totally hip.

Intl. Robot by Dylan Strzynski is all about robots and monsters and aliens. In short, they’re all about geek. Totally my scene. (And if you don’t think they’re cool, their Pow Robot will punch your lights out.)

They also have this super cool series of abduction tees. (Who doesn’t dream about all of the things that aliens might be abducting to learn about Earth?) I just hope that cow’s okay.

By the way, in case simply saying that I’m a nerd doesn’t solidify my rep as a legitimate geek, I’m seriously watching Back to the Future as I write this post. Also, I was in orchestra in Middle School and my extra curriculars in High School included Academic Decathlon, Computers Science Club, and Model UN. Uh, yeah. You’ve just been geeked.

Wasp and Bubbles

It should come as no surprise that I like things with a little bit of quirk.

Flytrap definitely meets that criteria. These t-shirts are unique, and I would get any of their styles for myself or as a gift. Also, I can get any style I want, because they’re all made for both women and men. Thank you.

More awesomeness:

  • Every piece includes multiple layers of transparent ink which means that each is actually one-of-a-kind, even when it’s produced in a batch.
  • Shipping on all t-shirts is free to customers in the U.S. and Canada, and international customers pay a flat rate of $10.
  • Flytrap uses upcycled materials, responsibly-produced blank goods, and organic fibers whenever possible.

guest post | Rock Your Inner Girl Geek

Today is a very special day here on greenapril because I’m featuring my very first guest blogger!

If you don’t know Susan from The Slender Grasshopper, you should—she’s a smart writer with a lot of breadth. She also has a fabulous Etsy shop where she sells gorgeously retro jewelry of her own creation.

On top of all of this, she shares my love of t-shirts! Huzzah!

Hello, everyone! I’m Susan from The Slender Grasshopper. By day, I’m organizing, planning and strategizing.  So by night, I try to let go and be creative.  I design jewelry and find it a great stress reliever.  I’m also experimenting with other crafty things to try to find out exactly what “creativity” means for me.

I am also self-professed geek.  And I’m finally at a point where I don’t let that word bother me anymore.  I like being smart and geeky!  So let’s take a look at a few t-shirts to rock your inner girl geek.

First up is this sweet little t-shirt from Ruche.  It’s just cute and adorable, and I love the big glasses on the little nerd!

Next is this gorgeous raspberry tribute to Marie Curie, the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the first person ever to win two!  And for a limited time, ThinkGeek is making a donation to The Girl Effect for every Marie Curie t-shirt sold.

Heroine: Marie Curie Babydoll

Don’t confuse geeky with dowdy. Etsy shop Speak For Yourself gets it right with this Smart Girls Are Sexy t-shirt.

The Big Bang Theory on CBS is a wonderful celebration of all things geek.  And poor Sheldon thinks that he can create an algorithm flow chart for friendship.  Doesn’t quite work that way but it was awfully funny seeing him try!

Huge thanks to Erika for letting me guest post!

Thanks Susan!

Bassists and Bike Messengers

I don’t know what it is about Slow Loris shirts that make me feel like I need a badass tattoo on my forearm to do them justice. Maybe it’s the fact that their designs look like they belong on female bassists or bike messengers. (They are from Washington State, after all—one of the many homes of awesome.)

Plus, they make belt buckles. What’s cooler than that?

Other things you should know:

  • All their drawings are hand-rendered: they never use computers for design.
  • Their studio is solar-powered.
  • They have a category in their shop called Test Prints where they sell, well, test prints.
  • They’re a dog and pig-friendly studio. (Their pig is named Marnie-biddles. I almost died of cuteness.)
